The 2017 Wildland Firefighter Academy is a live in 14 day academy located in Muir Beach California. Students will live together in tents, cook together in our Mobile Kitchen Unit. Successful recruits will have the ability to apply for state, federal, and private wildland firefighting agencies as entry level firefighters.

Sounds like a great program for individuals with little experience to get some great exposure and qualifications in the wildland realm. I don't know anything personally about the organization or cadre putting on the class, but by the certifications list, it sounds pretty solid. As a volunteer Firefighter, I was able to get most of these in our training and it for sure helped me get hired!

Looks like a great way to get some good experience if you have the time and cash, did anyone see anywhere what certs you get? Hopefully cal fire basic is included in this as well as a red card, 14 days seems like it would easily cover those requirements

"Throughout the academy representatives from various agencies visit to evaluate academy recruits for potential career and seasonal firefighter positions. Students receive substantial guidance on job seeking and the hiring process. Those interested in employment start the application process immediately for seasonal, emergency on-call and apprentice wildland firefighter jobs including engine, hotshot and helitack crews."
That's a cool bonus. One of the local community colleges down here has a wildland fire academy and they too have agencies come out to potentially hire the students right out of the gate. |

CalFire's cert comes from completing their Basic FF Academy. It involves some structural, in addition to a predominance of WL skills and knowledge. There are evolutions during the week including vehicle fires and complex interior attack. Practical testing for their cert involves throwing BAs and their 20ft ladder. A lot of their academy is geared toward learning about their organization and it's definitely a recruitment ground for them. Whether you do or don't want to work for them, it's an excellent training experience with superb instruction and costs very little.
The Golden State program looks excellent in many ways. The 14-day duration mirrors being on WL incidents more than the 5-day CalFire program. You also get S211 Pumps and S212 Chainsaw certs. Those are helpful for landing WL gigs and this training seems more slanted to Federal jobs. Lots of value for the cost of this program when you consider all the certs and the two full weeks of training. Last edited by CoastalRSQ; 12-30-2017 at 01:29. |
