Default LODD- Brian D. Massey, Kern County Fire

The name of a Kern County firefighter who died last year has been added to a memorial commemorating firefighters who died in the line of duty.

Fire Engineer Brian D. Massey, who died May 20, 2017, at the age of 56, has been added to the International Association of Fire Fighters Fallen Fire Fighter Wall of Honor in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Massey had been at home following a 48-hour shift at the Maricopa fire station, his home station, for roughly 14 hours when he died as the result of a "significant medical event," according to reports.

The memorial wall includes names of those who died while battling fires as well as those who died from illnesses such as cancer, heart disease and post-traumatic stress, an IAFF news release said.

During his 27-year career, Massey was stationed across Kern County, including stations in Buttonwillow, Lost Hills and Maricopa. Before becoming a firefighter, he played baseball at Biola University and was hired by the Angels as a practice pitcher for the major league team.

"The citizens of Kern County and the Kern County Fire Family lost a valuable asset to the community and a dear friend and co-worker," the release said.

Massey was a great team player, a fantastic firefighter and a great person. He gave back to the department and communities he served. Definitely lost a good one here. He is missed.
