The lack of 12 months experience kept me and a lot of others I know out of this testing process.

Does everyone think it’s still open or they just haven’t closed it yet? I would be shocked if they didn’t get 1200 applicants.

Considering the minimum qualifications, this test may be a “lateral type test”. The DESIRED qualifications of 24 months of 911 experience and Bachelors in Fire degree show the department wants experience and knowledge. Just had lunch with County buddy. He’s not a union guy or in the know, but said paramedics are in dire need at the current time. Tower expected to commence at Station 187 in Pomona, unknown date from his knowledge. He also expects many laterals from other fire departments.

I can see a bunch of LA City people applying for this as well.

Wind shift! Paradigm shift!

The bachelor degree requirement comes into play here further on in career paths. (Say what?)

In other words, in order to promote to captain a BS/BA may be the future of the Los Angeles County Fire Department firefighters, FF/PM's and Firefighter Specialists. Toss in the department's goal of having a paramedic on every apparatus and you get the picture.

What does that mean to you? Connect the dots.

The writing’s been on the wall for a decade now. Receiving my degree was easier with accredited universities participating in online programs. In all honesty, I learned more from this style of teaching and self taught pace.

Many departments currently require a BA/BS for Chief officer positions (or completion of Chiefs Officer classes). Throw in some 911 experience with paramedicine and specialty certs (HAZMAT, USAR, SWR, ARFF). Sounds like a well rounded candidate for a future leader position.

While this contradicts my earlier statements of being able to teach anyone to do the job, it’s easier to get hired with these qualifications. After hired, I then can teach any hose monkey to throw a ladder, write “inspection complete”, splint an arm, and cook 4 solid meals.

I think there was a misunderstanding here, a Bachelors degree is not required, just need a high school diploma.

Correct. It’s a desirable qualification, not a requirement.

I stand corrected. Desirable is the word. That covers that recruitment.

Now, moving on.

With a work force looking to promote, and having a BA/BS degree is desirable for that promotion, those who will get promoted will tend to get promoted over those who do not have the BA/BS degree.

The current FF/PM recruitment having the BA/BS degree as desirable sets up those applicants, if hired, for promotion in the future. Those on the department not having that BA/BS degree may not be so promotable.

When you see Desirable Qualifications on a job announcement, guess who gets the CJO or promotion? Those that have them, or have many of them, or those that don't or have less?
