Default Dave Rasmussen, PCF- Orange County Fire Department

The passing of Paid Call Fire Captain Dave Rasmussen. Dave was born in Long Beach, Calif. On June 8, 1945.

Dave was raised in Los Alamitos as part of a Fire Family. His grandfather was a Volunteer Firefighter in Nebraska and his father Marion, was one of the original Los Alamitos Volunteer Firefighters starting back in 1952 when Station 2 was all volunteer. In 1970, Dave married his wife Kathy and returned to Los Alamitos as a homeowner to raise his family. He joined his Father, as a FSV (Fire Suppression Volunteer) at the original Station 2 in the old adobe on Los Alamitos Blvd. (Now the Los Alamitos Museum). Dave also worked as an Industrial Mechanic for Monsanto Co. in Long Beach. His mechanical knowledge was vast which brought many skills and teachings to the younger firefighters who were just starting out. Dave served as the training officer at 2's and was able to teach/influence many of the young PCF's who went on to work full time for Orange County and other departments. Dave also served as the Equipment Captain and loved to serve on calls as a driver/operator when he could. Dave was asked to serve as the Station Captain for a short time after long time Station 2 Chief Leo Layton retired. Dave had to leave OCFA sooner than he wanted to in 1992, when Monsanto relocated him to New Jersey for his last 8 years at Monsanto before he was able to retire.

That didn't stop Dave's love for the Fire Service. He was able to continue as a member of the Swedesboro, New Jersey Volunteer Fire Department while living there for those 8 years. He was a valued asset to the NJ Dept. as he was able to bring a lot of his OCFA experience with him. When Dave retired, he and Kathy returned to their original home in Los Alamitos. Dave enjoyed retirement and took on many projects at home. About 6 years ago, Dave was diagnosed with lung cancer. He had a portion of his lung removed and later went into remission. On January 17th of this year, Dave had some complications related to his cancer and the E2 (B Shift) crew, the engine he started on, assisted in getting Dave to LAMC. After a long and courageous battle, Dave passed on June 10th surrounded by his wife Kathy, daughter Wendy and many of his family members. Dave was 68 years old.
