Default FL BC Suicide due to PTSD

http://www.statter911.com/2016/10/17...efore-suicide/

Sucks to hear but also a problem that maybe not too many people know about or how to deal with.

The guy seemed normal and was invested in the fire service.

Not CA but still related to the fire service.

Sad news. It's probably difficult in some places for higher ups to seek help from their peers without stepping down the chain of command. I can imagine that some may feel that it would be a sign of weakness and lose trust in their subordinates.

The subject of suicide and depression has been discussed here before and the tragedy continues.

This topic reminds me of the current trend of cancer awareness and prevention. I remember not that long ago when guys were diagnosed and not another word said. They'd get treated and some would survive and others would lose their battle. We would move on.

Nowadays, we are just starting to appreciate how much of an issue mental health is in the public safety business. I would venture to guess that in five to ten years from textbooks will be written for public safety professionals, classes, greater awareness of therapies, and cirriculum for fire academies.

I've personally had problems with it. Another buddy of mine who works for a LA beach city has problems with it too, and we kind of bounce things off each other. I have taken to writing a lot (like Lou from Rescue Me, but in shape and not terrible)

Textbooks in the true sense of what is written and used in institutions of higher learning? Maybe. But the data, and other books on PTSD, and stress and coping in the fire service, critical incident stress debriefing/management is out there and has been for more than a decade. Same thing applies for mental health maintenance/management classes at those institutions of higher learning.

People need to get educated and informed and bring the PTSD and firefighter suicide problem into the light of day so the problems can be addressed. Until that time, this rhetorical question remains:

Why is it firefighters can save others but not themselves?

Glad you have someone to bounce off of and found a way to destress.

Haha I remember that scene, why couldn't it have been the porn!

Curious... What exactly do you write about if you don't mind me asking.

I admit to dealing with the exact same issues as in the 90s, we had a string of child and infant drownings. Specifically in 1995, we had a dead baby in the bath tub call that effected a Firefighter Trainee so bad, he quit, spiraled down and it impacted his life as well.

This stuff is real. I would be hard for me because were usually close to our co-workers and I would be like WTF bro? This chief is kind of a hypocrite because he turns around and hurts his friends on the job and family. But he also must have hit so deep rock bottom that his vision was narrowed to use one mission.

Looks like a nice and decent person. I think the IAFF needs to address the issues of suicide, cancer and PTSD more.

This was recently covered in a news report from Chicago.

His wife, as you can imagine, was/is devastated.
