My current department runs 24/48 with a kelly day every 9th shift. The guys have been in uproar over the thought of 48/96. The largest argument I hear is “how are we going to be operationally effective during the second half after not sleeping all night?”

The answer to that is simply scaling back or cancelling training and station tasks day 2 so everyone catches up on sleep. (Or if your capt/admin is a fool lots of coffee and energy drinks)

Itís not the worst but itís like Iím always trying to catch up on sleep. If I spend part of my first day off sleeping, then it seems like I only really have one full day to myself before going back to work. (I donít sleep to well to begin with) Then again I work part time for another department quite often so that obviously doesnít help the sleep schedule.

Truly I never know what day of the week it is, I only know if itís A,B, or C day.

Slight thread hijack:

I do a 48/96; but, I would sometimes struggle with needing to sleep my first day back because taking naps would screw up my system. At first, I tried taking a couple hours nap right when I got home (maybe 0930-1130); but, then I would still be "awkward tired" the rest of the day. Then I tried to hold-off until about 1400-1600 for a nap. But that would kinda screw up my day as well. Finally, I started forcing myself to just suck it up and stay awake all day. Now, because I'm forcing myself to stay up during the daytime, I don't seem to have the sleep issues anymore. Easy, have you tried alternate solutions for keeping yourself on track?

For those of you who didn't see it, there was a thread posted a couple of days ago about sleep deprivation being linked to cancer in firefighters:

To be honest I havenít really put that much thought into it, I am addicted to a lot of caffeine. (Meth might be my next option). I should work less at my part time jobs truly.
