I agree 48/96 is brutal on busier rigs especially if your transporting. My department is doing a test year with it and as of right now I am not a fan. 48/96 is better for slower departments. Being up all night transporting can get exhausting. I love seeing my family everyday.

We have some busy engines and I agree about the second day being tough. However with housing prices going crazy in the Bay Area many of our members have moved far away. There is no way we would go back to the Kelly schedule now.

Hold on to your helmets! I'm working on tying in the recent US Navy collisions and groundings.

If you are up all night (soft time) doing transports, and still putting in a full day on duty (hard time) then your department is understaffed and beating up it's personnel no matter if you work 24's or 48's.

It ain't much of a home and family life if you go home, shift after shift after ass kicking 24's (or 48's), to sleep instead of being there 100% mentally and physically for your family.
